HHH Business Administration ]■■■ ■Hi MANAGEMENT EMPHASIS flHB I he student who concentrates in management prepares to apply the knowledge and skills needed to design and maintain a positive motivational work environment. Such an environment aligns the goals of the organization with those of individuals within the organization for the purpose of increasing organizational efficiency and effectiveness. In addition to the College of Business and Economics core requirements, the management student studies human resource management, organizational behavior, continuous improvement, effective communication, and information technology. Management students will choose specialty tracks with the approval of their advisor and the management area faculty advisory council. These tracks will allow students to be directed in their management study toward Human Resource management, Production Management, or a variety of other management specialties. MANAGEMENT EMPHASIS » Program Prerequisite: The Business Foundations courses must be completed with grades of "C-" or higher before registering for 300 or 400 level courses with the exceptions of Mgmt 320, BusAdm 300, Mktg 301, Mgmt 312, and IS&T 374. » Minor: Not required. » Grade Requirements: The minimum overall GPA for graduation is 2.5; additionally, students must earn a 2.5 GPA in business and economics courses. Finally, a course grade of "C-" or higher is required for all business and economics prerequisite and program requirements. » Credit Hour Requirements: A total of 183 credit hours is required for graduation — 89 of these are College requirements, 48 of these are required within the major, and the balance should be taken outside the College of Business & Economics. A total of 60 upper division credit hours is required (courses number 300 and above) — all of these are taken to fulfill College and major requirements. Advisement Advisement is required. See the College of Business and Economics Advisor in WB 213 (626-6065) and/or contact the Business Administration Department in WB 216 (626-6075). Contact the College advisor for information on transfer credits, business foundations courses, and admission applications. Advising in major selection, major requirements, and admission applications is provided by the Business Administration Department. Address either office for advising issues. Admission Requirements An application is necessary for all majors and minors in the College of Business and Economics. Completion of Business Foundations courses with course grades of "C-" or higher is required for admission and access by majors to upper division Business and Economics courses. Core and General Education Refer to pages 32-36 of this catalog for either Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts requirements. The following courses required for the Management major also will satisfy General Education requirements: Engl 111, Engl 112 (English Competency; Math 107 (Math Competency); Econ SS203, Psych SS101, Soclgy SS101 (Social Science); Botany LS140 (Life Science). Credit Hour Requirements: Minimum of 35 credit hours in approved courses. See the College of Business and Economics advisor for requirements. Students pursuing this management minor must major in a non-business field and receive approval of the program by the Business Administration Department chair. Organizational Behavior and Management (4) Su, A, W, S Focus of the course is on individual and group behavior in an organizational setting and on decision processes. Examples of topics included are motivation, group behavior, organizational design and development, organizational culture, and decision making theory. 320. Managerial Communications (4) A, W, S Study of corporate communication methods to improve communication in organizations. Written and oral reports tailored to achieve strategic goals contingent upon business situations. One hour of credit involves a lab setting to improve writing skills. Prerequisite: Engl 112. 330. Human Resource Management (4) A, W Study of principles and methods in managing specific aspects of human resources, either as an operating manager or as a human resource specialist. Topics include: legal constraints in managing human resources, strategic planning of human resources, recruitment, selection, orientation, performance evaluation, employee/ labor relations and communication programs, safety and health, and work scheduling. The computer will be used for analysis in certain areas studied. Prerequisites: Mgmt 312, Mgmt 320. 335. Employment and Labor Law (4) W This course will focus on legal and ethical issues most closely associated with Human Resource Management. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ADEA, and ADA form the heart of this course. Other topics include FLSA, OSHA, ERISA, sexual harassment, drug testing and privacy. Labor law issues include preventing unionization, and dealing effectively with a union. Prerequisite: Mgmt 330. 336. Business and Industrial Psychology (3) Builds upon Mgmt 330. A review of the psychological research underlying personnel administration practices as well as training in the application of these personnel principles. Topics include job satisfaction, attitude assessment, training, and compensation. The computer will be used for analysis in several areas such as job satisfaction evaluations. Prerequisites: Quant 261 or an equivalent statistics course, Mgmt 330.
