Show Weber State College Comment, July 1989, Page Alumnews 1936 1976 Jay H. Cragun furthered his education at Utah State, graduating in 1939 with a B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering with a specialty in Soil Technology. Then he went to work in Conda, Idaho for the Anaconda Phosphate Company as a chemist and mining engineer, 1939-1956. He also worked for U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Ogden as an engineer, 1956-1966 and for Hill Field as a chemist, 1966-1974. He now works for Weber School District, Ogden School District, and Ogden-Weber Area Vocational Center as a substitute teacher. He works in all subjects and enjoys teaching students from Sth grade on up, including adults. He is currently residing in Ogden with his wife LaRue B. Cragun. 1969 Larry McKenzie is currently serving as the director, Management Engineering Activity of the U.S. Army Information Systems Command. He has been selected to attend The Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. and will be in the class of 1990. He is currently residing in Arizona with his wife Maurie. Thomas R. Grimm has been named President and Chief Executive Officer, and will also maintain an ownership position in the Corporation of Price Savers Wholesale Warehouse Inc. Mr. Grimm started Price Savers in 1983 when he opened the first warehouse in Salt Lake City. Today he operates 13 warehouses throughout the western U.S. He plans to open 3 more buildings this year. Tom and his wife Sandy have four children and reside in Bountiful. 1983 Sandra Drake recently received the 1988 Outstanding Handicapped Federal Employee of the Year award. Ms. Drake, who is deaf and has serious visual handicaps, was among 21 federal employees honored recently for striving to overcome disabilities. She received the award on behalf of the Agricultural Research Service. Ms. Drake is an eightyear veteran in the service’s office in Logan, working as a clerk-typist. The purpose of this award is to recognize and publicize the versatility, value and wide range of federal job duties being performed by persons with physical and mental disability. Ms. Drake has struggled throughout her life to cope with congenital blindness in her left eye and substantial impairment in her right eye. Infections have affected her facial nerves, equilibrium and hearing and she has spent a total of 200 weeks in hospitals and undergone 48 operations. She was instrumental in organizing “Friends of the Deaf,” Logan’s first support group for the hearing impaired. She also teaches church classes and frequently speaks to youth groups encouraging them to overcome their challenges in life by turning obstacles from stumbling blocks into stepping stones. Ms. Drake resides in Logan, UT. Michael (class of ‘80 “83 zoology) has opened in Salt Lake City at 9th Dr. Bingham practices and cosmetic dentistry. 1984 Brad J. Bushman received a Ph. D. in experimental social psychology at the University of Missouri. Columbia, Phil Leavitt has recently received a masters degree in speech/ language pathology from theUniversity of Nevada Medical School. Mr. Leavitt has relocated from Reno, Nevada and is currently practicing speech, language and voice therapy in Boise, Idaho. He resides with his wife Diane. Lance D. Hamner was a 1988 graduate of the Indiana University School of Law at Bloomington. He was recently inducted into the I.U. chapter of the Order of the Coif. Membership is offered to those graduates who finish within the top 10 percent of their law school class. He is currently residing with his wife Kerla and employed as a deputy prosecutor in Indianapolis, In. lait Kevin D. Richards received his doctorate degree in May 1988 from Michael G. Murphy received a Master of Science degree in systems the University of Tulsa, College of Law. He has moved and has opened his own law practice. Mr. Richards is also and founder of Legal Research, Inc., a company created lawyers throughout the intermountain region with research needs. He is residing in Ogden with his wife Solange. management from the University of Southern California in commencement exercises conducted in Los Angeles, Calif. in May. Mr. Murphy is executive vice-president and manager of San Diego operations of Advanced Logistics Technology, Inc. Advanced Logistics Technology, Inc. is a logistics and engineering consulting firm. with offices in Mesa, Ariz. and San Diego, Calif. Mr. Murphy resides with his wife Barbara and daughter Erin in San Diego. to Ogden president to assist and other 1a 19/9 James C. Marker Michael S. Ellenburg was recently promoted to manager of the Advance Technologies and Systems Support Area of Douglas Aircraft Company. He is responsible for advanced aircraft supportability design, software support for Maintenance Engineering and provisioning and economic analysis of DAC and competitor aircraft. He graduated in June 1989, from West Coast University with a masters degree in logistics management. He is residing in California with his wife Colleen, (class of '81). recently finished a post-doctoral research fellowship at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Mo. where he was involved in research designed to assess the effect of exercise training on various physiological functions in the elderly. He is presently on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where as part of the department of human biology, he is involved in teaching and research in the area of exercise physiology. He received his Ph.D. from Brigham Young University in 1985. He is married to Arlene McClellan, and they have two 1987 sons. Floyd E. Hebdon has recently been promoted to senior chief hospital corpsman in the Navy Reserve. He also works as the acquisitions librarian in the LDS Family History Library. Mr. Hebdon and his wife Delynne currently reside in Salt Lake City. 1974 Donald Landin has recently been named vice president of Century Water Conditioning and Purification, Inc. in Williamstown, N.J. Don and his wife Lynda Hatch (class of ’75) and children Shawna 17, Jeremy 15, and Joshua 12 reside in Richland, New Jersey. Shannon L. (Wilcox) Chowen was recently promoted to administrative secretary in the Trust Group of First Security Bank of Utah. She was formerly the Executive Secretary. Mrs. Chowen is a member of the National Association of Bank Women. 1982 Jeff Collmar has recently accepted the position of New Orleans district manager for CIBA-GEIGY’s newly formed Summit Pharmaceuticals Division. Prior to his move, Mr. Collmar was employed by Wallace Laboratories, Division of Carter- Wallace, Inc. where he spent two years as a sales representative in Houston, Texas before being promoted to New Orleans district manager in 1984. Mr. Collmar 1988 Kent Steven Vance was recently promoted to credit analyst in the credit services department of First Security Bank. He was formerly a management trainee. The Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service awards recognize distinguished service to the college, state, nation or profession by an alumnus and nonalumnus respectively. Nomination forms are available from the WSC Alumni Office during regular work days, Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Nominations can also be made by writing a letter to the WSC Alumni Board of Directors and including a vita of the person’s accomplishments.
