Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 83, 1905, Social Dec. 31st all but Christiania, although the largest Branch in the Mission it has not paid its runing expences. I invoke the blessing of the Lord on the labors in the past, and ask for his continued blessing in the Year. 1906. Jan 1st received & answered some mail a feast was beeing prepaired for the growen members of the ward, and especialy were the old folks the guests of honer, and for a change from the usual way, my Self. Elder Henriksen (Conf. Pres.). Geo. M. Jorgensen. Mission Secty, & Victor Madsen Choir Leader. all Elders from Zion, were the Waiters, a good program was rendered & Social closed at abt. 10 o clok. nearly 150 was present & a very enjoyable day spent. food was provided in plenty & all was free, & all had ben invited. 2nd Office work. wrote Letter to Pres. Grant. att. Mutual at night. 3rd Rotine work. wrote Letter to Soren Rasmussen Dverpm at 8 p.m. att. meeting. (mutual) 4th Office work. Study & Choir meeting. 5th Rotine work got Letter from home (Lorenzo) Also from Pres. C.n. Lund. Mt Pleasant. 84, 1906, Birthday surprice Jan 5th at ev. all the Copenhagan Elders visited a Mr. Henriksen, a frindly family by invitation & spent a pleasent eving 6 Sent several releases, Transfers & Apointed N.P. Lund to preside over Kopenhagen Conf. vice N.J. Henriksen released, both to take effect Jan 26th wote Letters to Lorenzo, & Sister Camilla, at ev. was with many others invited to a birthday party Erirer Petersen being 17 years. had a nice time sang & Spoke, as did others. 7 Sunday, fast day, att. S. School, & 2 & 6 pm meetings, spoke in eving. latter with others spent ev. at a sisiter Larsens. Denmarksgade. 8th My 60 Mull birthday. eent with Bro Frederik Christensen to Printer Bording on Buisness. had invited all the Elders & Sister Otto. to Supper, in return the Elders surprised me with a nice traveling Shawl, received several cards & congratulations, at 8 p.m. att. Branch meeting 5 was ordained Elders 4 Preist & Teacher. I ordained Niels Larsen Elder, & Julius Petersen Preist, spoke & gave instruction. Hall was full & a good Spirrit prevailed. 9 A.m. rotine work. in p.m & Ev. With Elder Madsen visited some poor on a Hospital & Martin Nielsen at his home. bedfast 7 months |
