Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 129, 1906, Br. Gall Aug 22 came to see me. beeing a Sailor & not having been home for 1 ½ year. at ev att. meeting, after whch spent 2 hours with a man of what the call ‘Christi menighed’ Congregation of Christ 23rd I A.M. sent Letters to Conf. & in p.m. done some shoping for repairs to house assited Br. Madsen in same. at ev F. Christensen & I went out on Amager & Visited Bros. Jann & Nielsen, found both Families better than was expected, both Families having had sickness. 24th Rotine work. p.m. visited the Oriental Exebition at Charlotenborg. Super at a Sister Jorgensen, ev. att. Preisthood meetings. 25th Att. to Office work. & coresponding. at ev. was invited to Super at Br. Galls, all Office Personal, & Sister Franks present, spent a fine evning. it rained in torrents 26th Sunday, att. S. School and 2 & 6 p.m. meetings, spoke in ev. after, visited a Larsen Family in Gothersgade 27th Office Labor. & wrote to A.M. Christensen at ev. Sister Franks gave Supper to Office Personell & a few frinds, Spent a nice eving 28th Office work, corespondance reacting and att. Mutual in eving. 29th much Office Work. was sick, ev. Att. meeting 130, Danish Council, Relief Society resigns 30th was sick att to nesasary office work. at ev: took a walk. & att Choir practice. 31st In am. att Office work. in p.m. I and Sister Otto hunted a Family related to the Danish Council in Salt Lake. found them after much Labor, & were Kindly recd. at ev. att, Relief Society meeting. September 1st Att. to much Office work, done some buying and in eve. Visited Bro. Petersen in Veilegade 2nd Sunday, att. S. School. 2 & 6 pm meetings. after that Elder Mork & Wife intertained us at Office with Song & Music 3rd In Am. Att. to Office work. in P.M. The Office personel with Sister Otto & Franks had a ride in Bro. J. Olsens rig to Klampenborgs & Thereabt. in the ev. letters arrived seting us bussey with emigration also att. a meeting of Relief Society called for filling up quorums, one of the councilors having emigrated. also to find out the sentiments to the President, as some had expresed dissatisfaction, upon a secret vote it showed 30 yes 13 noes, 3 blanks, whereupon There was call for a vote to sustain the President unanimously. which was done, only 1 contrary vote After that the President Sister Nielsen came forward |
