Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 131, 1906, Sister Otto appt. in R. Society, At Kristiania for Conf. Sept. 3rd and presented in writing the resignation of herself, councilor. Secty & Treasurer. after some deliberation the same was presented, & unanimously accepted. after nomination by the Saints, Sister Otto was voted in as president & given time to select her councilors, & Sister Johana Johnson as Secty & Sister Mork was sustained as Treasurer all unanimous, a defying Spirrit was manifest in the retiring President. 4th Bussey in Office & preparing for Conf. trip. at ev. Supper at Nielsens at Kasernen 5th Much Office work. in p.m. visited a sick Br. Torvald Petersen. at ev. had several Telegrams abt. Emigration. latter att. meeting 6th a.m. Emigration buisness, wrote home & G. M. Jorgensen took bath packed up. at ev. att. Choir practice, 7th at 10:50 took Train for Kristiania Norway arrived there at 6:15 am on morning of The 8th was met by Pres. Rasmusen & Elder P.E. Andersen, during day associated with & interogated some of the Elders. at 8:30 ev. Conf. comenced with all the Missionaries & Conf. President made report. there were 34 Babtisms since last Conf. & many frinds made 132, Good Preishood meeting 8th Stayed at Office all Elders 31 in all were locate other at Office or with Saints. 9th Sunday, at 10 am. S. School convened, a good turn out. of both Children & Adults. In morning I was sucsesfull in setling some dificulties between some Elders at 3 & 7 p.m. att. Meetings. at 7 the Hall was crowded with attentive listners many feering Strangers. I spoke in all the meetings & was complimented, but I feelt week 10th Att. Preisthood meetings at 9:30 to 12:30 & from 3 to 6:30. it was a Spiritual feast but few Eyes were dry, & to all it was a great testimony of the acknowledgement of the Lord. every Elder spoke uninstructed all stated that they had an increased Testimony of the Truth, at 8:30 continued Conf. partook of Sacrement. I spoke ½ hour. all feeling fine Authories ware sustained & appointments made & all was unanimous. 11th Att. to buisness, visited sick at 2 Hospitals at ev. att. Relief Society Conf. & spoke 12th Went with Elders out on Bygdo, Took Supper at a Br. Coalstads, at ev. att Social where a fine programe was rendered & well attended 13th With Pres. looked up Financial matters in p.m. went to Holmeullen. in ev. att. Meeting |
