Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Christensen provides information about his childhood in Denmark, conversion to Mormonism, mission service, emigration to the United States, and overland migration to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 143, 1906, Reminces of first Endowment 1871, Visit of Pr. Matsen Oct. 30th 35 years this day since I went trough the Endowment house. it made an impression on me that stod before me constantly for years. I yet remember plainly the now Pres. J. F. Smiths earnest talk, urging all to live pure & moral lifes, dont see how any can find fault with or object to anything pertaining to it. I have often went in the Temple since & the more I go the more solemn it seems to me. 1906 Oct. 30th Was very bussey, at noon Pres P. Matson of Sweden called in, & Pres. Eph. Petersen of Trondhjem Conf. also came in P.m. was engage on a Pamphelt Elders instruction, at ev. att. Mutual. 31st Att. to current buisness, in p.m. worked on Pamphlet, at ev. att. meeting. November 1st Were buissey with Emigration matters & other Office work. also finished work on the pamplet. called ‘Elders Lamnelog.’ for guide & instruction, containing abt 40 Items of different council, wrote Letter to my Daugther Annie 2nd att. to current buisness, & in the p.m. & ev. visited Family Nielsen & Fr. Larsen not in the church 144, great Storm in Utah, 11 Elders arrive. Nov. 3rd att. to buisness. studied, & in p.m. & ev. visited 2 families Christensen & Larsen 4th Sunday. my deseased Wifes birthday. had she lived would have been 65 years old. I att. S. School, & 2 & 6 p.m. meetings. Satter visited a Family Christensens confirmed a new convert Jensine Sorine Caspersen Christensen, assisted in blesing a Child in the p.m. 5th I was very Bussey with Office work & correspondance at ev att. Branch meeting & spoke. News recd. This day reported the heaviest Windstorm & greatest destruction of property Known in Utah, 6th Election day in Utah, att. to current buisness in A.M. in p.m. went with Elder Madsen to a Br. Impersen family new in the church. fine people. 7th Had taken cold, & was quite unwell att. to current buisness. in p.m. visited a Christensen family. at ev. 11 missionaries arrived, from Utah & Idaho. bid them wellcome. & att. meeting in part. 8th Met with Elders. instructed and apointed them among all the Conferences. prepared for a trip to Aalborg. 9th 9am. Took train & ariived in Aalborg at 9 o clok ev. was met by Pres. Brienholt |
