Hand-written diary of James Miller Christensen (name changed from Jens Moller Christensen). Document contains memoirs from 1846 to 1904 and diary entries from 1904 to 1914. Rice Company in 1867. Later memoirs contain information about his experience with plural marriage and advice he received from Brigham Young regarding the practice of the United Order in Moroni, Utah, and handling business affairs. Throughout the account, he provides information detailing his farming and ranching enterprises. In 1904, Christensen records his travel east to preside over the Scandinavian Mission, and, while en-route, he describes his stops at the Louisiana Fair Exposition and Nauvoo, Illiniois. Thereafter, the bulk of the diary contains information pertaining to the day-to-day affairs of presiding over the Scandinavian Mission. |

James Miller Christensen was born in Denmark, converted to Mormonism, and migrated to Utah with the Leonard G. Rice Company in 1867. He settled in Moroni, Utah, where he farmed, ranched, practiced polygamy, and participated in a failed attempt at the United Order. By 1893, Christensen and both of his wives had moved to Salt Lake City. He served three missions to Scandinavia and, during the final, presided over the Scandinavian Mission. |

Show 1907 Sept 27 Visited a Museum in the a.m. in the p.m. was writting conversed with President. & rested some 28th Interviewed all the Elders. found all peace among Them, but some Trouble in Aalesund Branch caused unwise conduct of one Elder (girling) in p.m. took bath & at 8:30 att the opening Conf. meeting where reports of branches wre rendered, in most of them it was very dull. people seemed to be very indifferent. Bergen beeing an exception, 8 were babtized since last Conf. against 6 in Trondhjem & 45 in Kristiania, Elders felt good. 29th Sunday att. S. School Conf. which as usual was in caracter, best in the Mission children trained with great care, and each one took its part without faltering. in a dialog was a welcome extended to me, & a Song composed in My haner. After shool a Surprise was sprong by an invitation to all the Elders 21 in all to go to a Hotel for dinner, at the expence of the Saints. here we were joined by 43 of the Branch members, also There were made Speches, & dialogs & poetry was read. composed for the ocation; a Sister Lillewick was the Leading spirrit in This, & a pleasant time was 29th spent. att 4 p.m. att. meeting in the Saints Hall. Elders Keller & Madsen beeing the Speakers at 8m meeting was held in a large rented Hall. both meetings were well attended. at 8 Elders & Wroll Olsen & myself were the speakers all was quiet and the many strangers, listened attinlively, except a few that left the hall at the mention of Joseph Smiths name, 30th Had Preisthood meeting in the A.m. and in the p.m. advised with the President abt. locating the Elders. at ev. att. a Saints meeting where Sacrament was administered, authorities sustained, & remarks made by 2 Elders. I made my farwell speach, meeting well attended. during the day it ocurred That a sister abt. to emigrate presented herself for a blessing. (it having been a custom to do so in Bergen) but beeing aware That the Women went under untruthful statment I said to Pres. Barup. I could not feel justified in asking the Lord to assist any in telling a Lie. & the Idea of blessing Emigrants was at best but an uncaled for custum. not general, & as far as I Know without authoirty from Head of church, The Women & her frinds took offence. Womens Name Laure Jensen. Sister Lillewick Took side with Them |
