Show GENERAL INFORMATION History Weber State College was founded at Ogden, Utah as Weber Stake Academy on January 7, 1889 by the Weber Stake Board of Education of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first two years of college work were added in 1916. In 1923, the high school courses were discontinued. The 1933 Utah Legislature established Weber as a state junior college and placed it under the control of the State Board of Education. The 1959 Utah Legislature authorized the addition of upper division courses which resulted in the first junior class in 1962-63 and the first senior class in 1963-64. The 1961 Utah Legislature created a Board of Trustees for the College. The 1969 Legislature abolished the Board of Trustees and placed Weber and all other state institutions under the control of a State Board for Higher Education, the members of which are appointed by the Governor of the State. For many years the college campus was located near Ogden's business section. In 1954 it was moved to a new 175-acre site at 3750 Harrison Boulevard. With a stadium and four classroom buildings, Weber State College in September, 1954, pioneered a progressive new undertaking in community and state educational history. The Weber State College campus now consists of over 275 acres of land and thirty-two buildings. When the school opened on January 7, 1889, a total of 98 students appeared before two instructors, Louis F. Moench and Edwin Cutler. Today 325 faculty members instruct more than 10,000 students in a wide variety of subjects. Growth over three- quarters of a century reflects the deep concern of Utah's citizenry for higher education. Accreditation Weber State College has been accredited as a Junior College since 1932. Since the beginning of 1963-64 school year, it has been accredited as a four-year, degree-granting institution by the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools, the same organization which accredits all higher institutions in the states of this region of the United States.
