Show Arts, Letters and Science — Geology Department of Geology and Geography Richard W. Moyle, Chairman Professor: Walter R. Buss; Associate Professors: Richard W. Moyle, E. Fred Pashley, Jr.; Assistant Professors: Deon C. Greer, Don R. Murphy, Thomas R. Neff, Wayne L. Wahlquist, Robert S. Waite. The Department of Geology and Geography provides an opportunity for the student to acquire an appreciation of his natural environment through lectures, films, laboratory studies, and field trips. Three other important functions are also served: (1) Students are made conscious of such world problems as conservation and the reciprocal relationship of man and his environment, (2) Provides fundamental training needed by those desiring to make a vocation of geography or geology, and (3) Provides the necessary training to meet employment demands in the Earth Sciences and Geography as taught on the secondary school level. Departmental Geography Major—Students taking the Geography Major are required to complete a minimum of 45 hours of satisfactory work in Geography including the following courses: Geog- graphy 1, 23, 102, 104, 124, 140, 160, 190, and 15 hours in regional courses, 105 through 117. Majors are also required to take Geology 21, 105, and 115. Departmental Geography Minor—Students taking the Geography Minor are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of satisfactory work in Geography including the following courses: Geography 1, 11, 23, and 10 hours of upper division courses. Departmental minors are also required to take Geology 21. Minors are encouraged to take Geography 1 and 11 prior to regional courses. The Geography Minor for students majoring in an earth science may be completed with a minimum of 26 hours in Geography including the following: Geography 11, 13, 23, 102, and 8 additional hours of upper division courses. Geography Teaching Major—Students taking the Geography Teaching Major are required to complete a minimum of 46 hours of satisfactory work in Geography including the following courses: Geography 1, 23, 101, 104, 124, 126, 140, 190 plus at least 15 hours from the following: 105, 107, 109, 111, 113, and 117. In addition Geology 115 is required. Geography 102 is strongly recommended. Geography Teaching Minor—Same requirements as Departmental Geography Minors. Departmental Geology Major—Students taking the Geology Major are required to complete from 48-60 hours of satisfactory 142 Arts, Letters and Science — Geology work in Geology including the following classes: Geology 21 or 54 (or 5 plus an audit in Geology 21 Laboratory), 22, 61, 62, 63, 110, 125, 140, 150, 162, 195, and either 121, or 153. Geology majors are also required to take the following courses: Chemistry 24, 25, and 26; Mathematics 18 and 21; and fifteen hours of physics in the General Physics or Engineering Physics series. Engineering Physics is required of those going into Geophysics. Departmental Geology Minor—Students taking the Geology Minor are required to satisfactorily complete the following courses: Geology 21 or 54, (or 5 plus an audit in Geology 21 Laboratory), 22, 61, 62, 63, 110, and 150. Earth Science Teaching Major—A student selecting this major must have a minimum of 37 hours of Geology, 13 hours of Geography, 4 hours of Astronomy, plus the following minimum hours in the supporting areas: 10 hours of Physics, 10 hours of Chemistry, 10 hours of Mathematics, and 4 hours of Botany. The required courses represent minimal training in the Earth Sciences but are selected to provide the student with a workable knowledge and an adequate base for graduate work. A minor is required and one of the Biological Sciences is strongly recommended as the minor. The required courses are: Geology 21, 22, 61, 63, 75, 110, and three courses from the following list—Geology 105, 115, 121, 125, 140, 150, 153, 162. In addition, Geography 13, 23, and 102; Physics 14; and Botany 141 are required. Required courses in the supporting areas include Physics 51, 52, 54, 55, or 61, 62, 64, 65; Chemistry 24, 25; Mathematics 18 and 21. Physics 53 or 63, 56 or 66 are suggested as electives. Earth Science Teaching Minor—Students taking the Earth Science Teaching Minor are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of satisfactory work in Geology and Geography including the following courses: Geology 15, 21, 22, 110, and either Geography 13 or 102, plus one of the following: Geology 105, 115, 125, 140 or 150. Students are encouraged to strengthen their background in Earth Science by taking Geology 75, Physics 14, and Geography 23. The Earth Science Teaching Minor complements both the Biological and Physical Science Teaching Major in our present Secondary School teaching program, both in-state and contiguous areas. Composite Teaching Major in Physical Sciences—(Geography- Geology emphasis) See Mathematics and Physical Sciences Composite Teaching Major, School of Education. Any deviation from these requirements must have departmental approval prior to the senior year. 143 |
