Show General Information General Information The Honors Program is administered by a director and a program committee who are directly responsible to the Academic Vice President of the College. The program committee sets the standards and procedures. The director executes the policies of the committee. An Honors adviser in each of the academic departments of the College is available for the students who seek assistance in the Honors Program. Additional information on the Honors Program may be obtained from the office of the Director of the Honors Program. Objectives The explicit aims and purposes of the Honors Program are as follows: 1. To identify students of superior intellectual ability and range of interests who desire the opportunity to enrich their college education through study and association with others of similar endowment. 2. To provide special, challenging course work, colloquia, seminars, lectures, research projects, etc. which are designed for qualified students who desire to pursue both intellectual depth and breadth of scholarship in various fields of learning. 3. To enable selected students to pursue some independent, scholarly lines of interest and creative endeavor which are not ordinarily open to them during their undergraduate studies, with the personal guidance of mature scholars on the faculty as aids and associates. 4. To prepare students for graduate study and advanced degrees in fields and problem areas of interdisciplinary and interdepartmental concern. 5. To encourage students to acquire historical, psycho logical, religious, scientific, and philosophic perspectives on their culture through a knowledge and self- discipline ordinarily ignored or neglected in their previous educational experience. 6. To aid the student in achieving a knowledge of himself in relation to his culture which will prepare him for effective personhood, citizenship, and membership in the national and world community. 3. Evidence of academic capability. 4. Three letters of recommendation from teachers or counselors. 5. An interview with the Director or his representative. Regular application for admission to the College is filed through the Admissions Office. No one can be considered eligible for the Honors Program until he has been accepted into the College. Participants in the Honors Program will be selected each quarter from fifteen percent of the entering students who rank highest on predicted grade point averages. Participants will also be selected each quarter from among students enrolled at Weber State College or from among transfer students who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of not less than 3.5 for freshmen, 3.3 for sophomores, and 3.2 in upper division. Proof of interest and intellectual ambition is often indicated by a student's published writing or other recognition of personal excellence, by very high College Board scores, distinction in National Merit Scholarship competitions, by ACT scores, or by extraordinary recommendations contained in letters of recommendation. Final choice among applicants is made after personal interview by the Director of the Program in consultation with the Honors Program Committee. Scholarships A certain number of scholarships are available for deserving students who desire to compete for them. Application forms are available from the office of the Director of the Honors Program. Registration Registration for Honors students will proceed according to established college procedures with these exceptions: 1. Honors students will register the first day of registration. 2. Honors students will obtain their Honors sections cards from the office of the Director of the Honors Program rather than from the Registrar's Office. Admission to the Honors Program The normal requirements for admission to the Honors Program are: 1. Regular admission to the College by the Office of Admissions. 2. Evidence of intellectual ambition, creativity, and independent study. Retention Standards for the Honors Program To stay in the Honors Program, participants must maintain an accumulative 3.0 grade-point average. Any exceptions to these standards must be made by the Director in consultation with Honors Program Committee. 30 31 |
