As suggested above, within the School of Arts, Letters and Science a number of programs preparatory for the professions are provided. These include pre-agriculture, pre-dental, pre-engineering, pre-forestry, pre-law, pre-medicine, pre- pharmacy, pre-range management, and pre-veterinary medicine. A limited number of programs of a terminal, technical and less than baccalaureate level are offered within the School. Included are the dental assistants program, the two year nursing program and radiologic technology. Opportunity is also given students to receive Associate Titles at the conclusion of two years of study provided the general education requirements and the appropriate specific requirements are met. Thus, the School of Arts, Letters and Science, with its broad offering and its numerous and varied programs is able to meet the needs of students with greatly differing interests. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT The administration of academic advisement is placed under the Dean of the School of Arts, Letters and Science. The functions of advisement are carried out by the Director of Admissions, the Assistant Dean for General Education, the Coordinator of Guided Studies, and the Director of Counseling. Meeting the advisement needs of all students is accomplished through cooperative action involving coordination through the Advisement Office, advisement by faculty within departments, guidance for special students through Guided Studies, and professional counseling assistance provided by the Counseling Center. An adviser is appointed for each student in each area to assist him with his registration schedule and to guide him towards a degree of his choice or towards a Certificate Program. Guided Studies Program—Based on the evidence of low high school grades and/or performance on college entrance examinations, a considerable number of applicants for admission to colleges are not well prepared to perform the academic work required. Some of these applicants may, however, be admitted under special consideration. The Guided Studies Program at Weber State College is designed to assist these students to adjust to college life, compete more effectively in their academic environment, and to make an efficient transition into an academic or technical program of their choice, consistent with their capabilities. When a student is placed in the Guided Studies Program by the Director of Admissions, he is assigned to a member of the Student Counseling Service or another selected faculty member for personal and academic advisement. He is expected to arrange a conference with his adviser well before registration—at least not later than Freshman Orientation. His class schedule will be arranged in cooperation with and approved by his adviser. A student assigned to Guided Studies may apply to transfer to a regular academic or technical program of his choice after completing, with an average grade of "C" or better, a study skills course, English 1, one Life Science or Physical Science course accepted toward the General Education requirement, and one Humanities or Social Science course accepted toward the General Education requirement. Requirements for the completion of specific programs in the School of Arts, Letters and Science are indicated in the appropriate departmental sections of the catalog. The general requirements for the baccalaureate degree and the area requirements are as indicated in the section of the catalog entitled "Academic Information." For those who plan to teach, professional education requirements are as specified by the School of Education. 86 87 |
