The following courses may also be applied to general education requirements: Economics 10, Economic History of the United States; History 5, American Civilization; History 10, United States History and History 11, United States History; Political Science 1, American National Government; Philosophy 120, Philosophy of Democracy, or 2. Presenting advanced placement credit in American History or suitable transfer courses from other institutions, or 3. Passing a special examination administered before the end of the second week of each quarter under the direction of the Dean of the School of Arts, Letters and Science. If this option is completed, then the Social Sciences requirement is reduced to 9 credit hours. Bachelor of Arts Requirements—In addition to the foregoing requirements concerning total hours, upper division work, majors, minors, residency, and specific courses, a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts shall complete, as general education area requirements, at least 40 credit hours in the four areas of Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. These hours shall be proportioned as follows: at least 15 credit hours in the Humanities, with courses selected from at least 4 groups; at least 12 credit hours in the Social Sciences; at least 9 credit hours in the combined areas of the Life Sciences and the Physical Sciences, with at least one course in each area. In addition, women students shall complete one approved course in the Department of Family Life. A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one approved foreign language. A maximum of 15 college credits from high school may count toward filling the foreign language requirement, provided the student can pass an examination to demonstrate his knowledge of the subject. Transfer credit from another institution will be recognized without an examination. Bachelor of Science Requirements—In addition to the requirements concerning total hours, upper division work, majors, minors, residency, and specific courses, a candidate for a Bachelor of Science shall complete, as general education area requirements, at least 40 credit hours in the four areas of Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Second Baccalaureate Degree—A student may qualify for admission to a second baccalaureate degree following the completion of a first baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution. Admission to a second baccalaureate degree program must be approved by the Admissions Committee prior to registration for this program. Application forms for a second baccalaureate degree may be obtained in person or by mail from the Admissions Office. To qualify for the second degree, the student must complete a full year of residence and a minimum of 45 credit hours with a grade point average of at least 2.0, in addition to whatever requirements he may have completed for the first baccalaureate degree. General Education Area Requirements HUMANITIES AREA The general education area requirements in Humanities may be satisfied by selecting from the following courses. A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts must complete at least 15 hours from at least 4 groups, one of which must be literature. A candidate for the Bachelor of Science must complete at least 9 hours from at least 2 groups, one of which must be literature. I.
