Machine Shorthand—Introduction to touch shorthand, keyboard, theory, and speed development with dictation speeds to 60 words a minute and above. Prerequisite: Office Administration 2 or equivalent, or take concurrently. (3). 010. Hy-Speed Longhand (ABC Shorthand)—A method of fast writing based on the English alphabet; abbreviations, omission, and blending of letters; dictation and transcription. Prerequisite: Office Administration 2 or equivalent. This class continues into Office Administration 12. (3). Oil. Beginning Personal Shorthand—Introduction to theory of Gregg Shorthand system with emphasis upon reading and writing fluency. (3). 012. Beginning Personal Shorthand Continued—Use of the entire shorthand theory in practice dictation. A speed of at least 60 words a minute should be attained. (3). 013. Intermediate Personal Shorthand Dictation—Stenographic short cuts, abbreviations, phrases and transcription. A shorthand speed of at least 80 words a minute should be attained. (3). 017. Economics and Business Administration for CPS Review—Fundamental economic concepts found in the secretary's day-to-day contacts with prices, taxes, labor, social responsibilities of business; government regulations of business, sources of economic data. Business organizations and management; types of ownership; staffing of business; management controls; techniques of office supervision and management. (3) 018. Secretarial Accounting for CPS Review—Classification of accounts, interpretation of accounting data and of financial records as related to top-level secretarial work, employer's personal record keeping, payroll, petty cash, income tax reports, budgets, and notes. (3) 019. Secretarial Skills and Procedures for CPS—This course is one of a series of three courses designed to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare the secretary to take the Certified Professional Secretary's Examination. (3). 051. Beginning Personal Typewriting—Development of sustained typing power, control of figures and symbols, improvement of techniques. A speed of at least 30 words per minute should be attained. (2). 052. Beginning Personal Typewriting Continued—Review of keyboard, business letters, tabulated reports, improvement of basic skills, and intensive speed building. A speed of at least 40 words per minute should be attained. (2). 053. Intermediate Personal Typewriting—Manuscripts, special problems in letter arrangement and business forms. A speed of at least 60 words per minute should be attained. (2). THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION The School of Education offers many general courses in the departments of Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Family Life, Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and Library Science. Many courses listed in the day section of the catalog will be taught in the Division of Continuing Education. In addition, the following courses may be offered: Department of Family Life Courses of Instruction 010. Basic Food Preparation—Selection, preparation, and buying of food for the family. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 011. Family Meals—Practical experience in planning and preparing meals for the family. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 012. Foods for Special Occasions—Preparation of attractive, unusual dishes especially suitable for guests and parties; some emphasis on foreign foods. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 013. Nutrition and Family Health—Importance of food and its relationship to good health and successful living; demonstration of preparation techniques and discussion related to weight control. (1). 017. Clothing Construction—Clothing construction techniques, pattern and fabric selections suitable for the individual needs. (1). 366 367 |
