Show A checker tournament was held on August 3 and 4, at the Slaterville Park, under the direction of Gerald Taylor. Seven participants took part and all received awards. Those competing were Bill Morris, Chace Holley, Keith Butler, Lori Knight, Megan Knight, Trevor Knight and Gerald Taylor. The First Annual Marriott-Slaterville Softball Tournament was held August 31, September 1 and 2, 2000, under the organization of Trudy Hill. Two teams battled gallantly to claim the title, despite heavy rains. After receiving the last sales tax revenue from the State on September 1, 2000, for the fiscal budget year ending June 30, 2000, Mayor Butler reported that all bills for the year were paid and over $150,000 was carried over for roads, municipal and budgeted funds, and a "rainy day" fund. Citizens' thanks go to all those involved in the many hours of work and decisions necessary to make this possible. In September, through the hard work of Duncan Murray and Bill Morris, the City was awarded a grant by the Utah Quality Growth Commission for a nature park on 1700 West, just above the Slaterville Diversion Dam. Jim Ito, Parks and Recreation, will be in charge and is putting together an advisory committee for development and management, if the park is eventually acquired. Also, in September, the City Council, at the request of Weber County, approved a resolution to encourage the use of the new Weber County Waste Transfer Station. Alison Towbridge at 777-9011 coordinates the county dump cards. The Good Neighbor Award was created by the City Council in August 2000 to recognize community residents and businesses who do an outstanding job in making Marriott-Slaterville a better place to live. Seven nominations were received and all were selected as recipients by Mayor Butler. The 2000 Good Neighbor Awards were presented at the City Council meeting on November 2, 2000, to Arthur and Virgie Storrer, Bill Green, Scott Van Leeuwen, Jim Bidlack of H&A Sales, Kim and Dorothy Slater, Sharon and Orvil Holley, and Scott Taylor of Golden Spike Equine Hospital. The United States Post Office advised Mayor Butler that the proper postal addresses for our community would speed correct mail delivery. The preferred use is "MSC, UT." Alternate addresses are MS City, UT, Marriott-Slaterville City, UT, Marriott, UT, and Slaterville, UT. At the November 7, 2000, general election, over 550 of approximately 750 registered voters cast ballots in the Marriott-Slaterville precinct; a percentage higher than most precincts in the state. Marriott-Slaterville gave a landslide vote to George Bush. Fortunately, the election in Weber County, and all of Utah, went smoothly (no butterfly ballots, hanging chads, etc.), in contrast to the long-running debacle in Florida's presidential election. Some controversy arose during November as residents on 250 South opposed the commercial-type conditional use for the assembly of wooden spools in the area. As a result, the Council overturned the permit granted by the Planning Commission. The proposed new sign regulations and proposed dark sky ordinance were opposed by representatives from several sign companies. Council members Kim Slater and Rob Smout had requested that light pollution be limited by a dark sky ordinance. These ordinances were referred back to the staff for drafting in an attempt to mediate differences between the sign company representatives and residents. More Good News (especially for rainy days)! Mayor Butler and Duncan Murray were able to get Ogden City to repair the leaking roof of the City office. Our City leases its office through the private agency assigned to redevelop the former Defense Depot Ogden, now Business Depot Ogden. Every storm since the City government moved into the office has brought a deluge of water which had to be directed by plastic to the numerous buckets and barrels placed around abundantly. Many heads have been sprinkled during planning and council meetings. Now a complete new roof has been installed~let the rains come. The council passed a resolution to compensate our landlord for the expense of the roof replacement. 2 |
