Detective Gary Worthen and Vernon Hairston said that there are presently 100 active gangs in Weber County. A gang is defined as "three or more people who engage in unlawful, criminal behavior." Gang members frequently use symbols, names, letter or colors to show their affiliation. Things You Can Do To Help Keep Your Kids From Getting Involved In Gangs: 1. Try to Learn more about gangs in your area. 2. Report any suspicious activity to the police. 3. Watch for graffiti and immediately remove graffiti by calling Juvenile Court Graffiti Removal 629-8752. 4. Participate in programs that deter crime in your neighborhood. 5. Teach youth early that gangs are detrimental. 6. Youth need punishment for bad behavior, and rewards for good behavior. 7. Families need to spend more time together. 8. Parents and other adults need to be role models for the youth. 9. Kids need a safe place to share their feelings. 10. Kids need other adults (besides parents) in their lives who care about them. 11. Listen to your children and ask their opinions. 12. Parent should set firm limits with children and teens. 13. Do not allow your kids to dress in gang-style clothing. 14. Get to know your child's friends and the friends's parents. Parents should look for any drastic changes in their children behavior, including associating with a new group of friends, using a different style of language, desiring a great deal of privacy, acquiring new possessions without the parents knowledge, claiming gang affiliation, or dressing in gang-related clothing. For youth, getting out of a gang isn't easy, but it can be done. Kids should find people, especially adult, who think they are special, and will keep supporting and encouraging them. Believe in yourself. Gangs are a deadend street - no matter who you are, what you have done, or where you live, "YOU DESERVE BETTER."
