Show Weber River too polluted for a parkway A few months ago a great deal of waste was released into the Weber River, but it seems so small to the amounts I see dumped each day. We complain about letting the wetlands go to the Legacy Highway, and rejoice at the wonders a river parkway would make. What most people don't realize is that in its present state, there will never be a river parkway that can complete a circuit around the city. Any place that does not already have a parkway doesn't have it for a reason. The river is immensely polluted. When you put a thousand cars within a thousand feet of a river and let them sit there for 10 years, the oils and other chemicals from the cars tend to seep into the groundwater, and it seeps into the river. Why are auto salvage yards located next to the river? If we so want a parkway, why do we allow it? As it is, any parkway along the river right now would make me sick to think about. Sure, I want to run with my wife along the river with pristine views of an old car falling into the water. Twenty-six acres of flat farmland were just bought next to my property. Someone wants to turn the area into an industrial park. Of course, it's next to the river. If anything, I would think the farmers in west Weber County would be more outraged about this than about any sewage. At least sewage is biodegradable. I suggest something be done, but unfortunately my resources are small. I only have the freedom of the press. Michael Schofield Marriott-Slaterville February 3, 2001 Concern about Weber River 43 |
