Show members are Regina Smout, Master Gardener with Urban Forestry training, James Elmer, Heidi Currie and Michael Hunsaker. Melinda Redman of Logan is serving as Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, and works with the new committee. The first meeting was held May 9, 2001. The major goal is to suggest and design the park, including the new river walk way, for the land purchased earlier. That big smile on the face of City Administrator William M. Morris recently, was there because he graduated from the University of Utah Law School on May 12, 2001. Immediately though he started preparing for the grueling tests for admission to the Utah State Bar. Mayor Butler's infamous ducks made media news again when he was recently interviewed by Channel 2 news about his wayward and wandering fowl. Preliminary plans were announced by Shauna Meyerhoffer in June for the July Fourth holiday community celebration. Preparations began for the festivities under the direction of several enthusiastic volunteers. Of interest in the recreational area, tennis lessons are available this summer, under the direction of Jim Ito. A softball tournament will also be held later in the season. A new "critter" has been sighted in the southwest part of the community and has generated media coverage across the state. Allegedly a badger, (or badgers,) has been seen in the area, and has attacked and killed some pets and poultry. There has to be some truth in its existence, because the Badger family has erected a mail box on the corner of 700 South and 2050 West. The Department of Wildlife Resources tells us that badgers are a protected species, and can only be taken if imminently harming a domestic animal or person. They are considered aggressive and care should be taken around them-do not taunt or harass-keep your distance! The City Council changed its regularly scheduled meeting from the 1st to the 3rd Thursday of each month, beginning in July. As before, an additional meeting will be scheduled if needed. Preliminary results of the 2000 U. S. Census show a new population figure of 1,425 in Marriott-Slaterville, which is lower than the current City estimate at 1,524. Questions about the accuracy of the census have been raised throughout the nation. Barbara Brown and Brenda Holmes, the Youth Council advisors, have requested that interested youth of grades 9-12 apply for membership in the Youth Council. At the June 11 meeting of the Marriott-Slaterville Park Committee, Heidi Currie volunteered to act as secretary for the committee. Randy Phipps, Planning Director, was enthusiastic about the potential of an extended trail system within the City. However, some reservations were expressed as several citizens living near the area of the park/trail voiced concerns about the development. Stephen Elmer is concerned about the placement of the parking lot and restrooms, which he would prefer at the western part of the property. Shelley Patterson is worried about possible noise from the park impacting her home. Also, she is concerned about trespassers. Both she and Dan Patterson asked about the use of fences and their effect. Mr. Patterson is worried about liabilities of home owners, including problems between his dog and park users. 29 |
