Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY NOVEMBER 2000 November was an exceptionally busy month. On the national front, presidential elections brought large numbers of voters to the polls. U.S. Presidential candidates George W. Bush and Al Gore created a national controversy surrounding ballot counts in Florida. In Marriott-Slaterville, our polls were filled, voter turn out was very high, but no election controversy ensued. George Bush took Marriott-Slaterville by a landslide. However, Marriott-Slaterville did not entirely escape controversy. Several issues which were disagreeable highlighted in the agendas. First, residents on 250 South (School House Road) appealed to the Council the granting of a conditional use permit by the Planning Commission. At the appeal hearing, many residents from the neighborhoods spoke opposing the commercial-type conditional use for the assembly of wooden "spools" as too intrusive on the residential character of that area. The Council overturned the conditional use permit granted by the Planning Commission based upon the facts revealed at their meeting. Second, the Central Weber Environmental Control Act was discussed but no action was taken. The matter was tabled until another meeting. Two other contentious items were the proposed new sign regulations and proposed dark sky ordinance. Representatives from several sign companies appeared before the Mayor and Council to testify on sign regulations. Council members Kim Slater and Rob Smout had requested that city staff prepare a dark sky ordinance to help prevent light pollution in the community. The sign company representatives opposed the idea. The sign regulations and dark sky material was referred back to staff for further drafting in conjunction with the sign company representatives and interested community residents. 134 |
