Show October 9, 2000 Opponents agree: No Legacy in Weber By CHERYL BUCHTA_ Standard-Examiner staff The two men vying for Senate District 20 have one thing in common. Neither believe the far reaches of Weber County need the Legacy Highway. And that's a big issue for voters in the district that includes Roy, Riverdale, half of Washington Terrace, West Haven, Hooper, Warren, West Warren, Marriott-Slaterville, Farr West, Harrisville, Plain City and West Weber. Democratic incumbent Joe Hull, 54, said the state has no intentions of building the Legacy Highway for another 50 years. "To site it now will restrict those rights for 50 years," Hull said. "By not paying for it for 50 years, they've stolen property rights from those individuals." Instead, he said, the state should improve arterial roads it previously designated in a master plan to take care of additional traffic. Those arterial roads would funnel traffic onto the Legacy Highway at 31st Street in Ogden. His Republican challenger, Scott Jenkins, agrees. "(Utah Department of Transportation) studies show no need for a northern arm." Instead, Jenkins, 50, supports the 31st Street alignment. "That's a very natural alignment." Hull Jenkins 15 |
