Show April 29, 2001 WSU honors scholar-athletes Zacharovo Clinger Cottle Howe Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN - Weber State University's athletic department honored more than 200 student-athletes at its yearly athletic awards banquet on Friday. Lenka Zacharova and Charles dinger were named female and male athletes of the 2000-2001 athletic year, while Clinger and Brooke Cottle were given career achievement awards. Additionally, Tenille Howe and Joel Barrow were named WSU's Big Sky Conference scholar-athletes. Zacharova, a senior from Bratislava, Slovakia, won the ITA Central Region Tournament, becoming the first WSU tennis player to capture a regional singles title. During the year she had a 30-4 record in singles and 25-5 in doubles. She was named the MVP of the 2001 Big Sky championships, leading the Wildcats to a second-place finish. Clinger, a senior from Freedom, Wyo., Clinger won the 2000 Big Sky outdoor high jump and triple jump title, and earned All-America honors for placing ninth in the triple jump in the NCAA championships. He qualified for the 2000 USA Olympic Trials where he placed fourth and was named first alternate on the team in the high jump. During the 2001 indoor season, Clinger won the NCAA Division I indoor high jump championship, becoming the first WSU male athlete win an NCAA indoor championship. During dinger's career at WSU, he has won three Big Sky indoor high jump titles, two Big Sky outdoor high jump titles and one triple jump title. He holds the school record, both indoor and outdoor, in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Cottle, a senior from Ogden, is the school record holder in the women's high jump at 6-0 1/2 indoors and 6-0 out-doors. She won the 2000 and 2001 Big Sky indoor women's high jump championship, and has captured Big Sky outdoor titles in 1998, 1999 and 2001. She earned All-America honors in the 2000 NCAA Division I indoor championships, placing eighth in the high jump. Howe, a senior from Ogden, has a 3.98 GPA and is a four-year letterman on the women's golf team. Barrow, a senior from Ogden, will graduate this spring with a 3.66 GPA in physical education-lifestyle management. He was a four-year letterman on the WSU football team and a three-year starter at defensive tackle. The MVPs of each sport were announced. They are: ?
