Show STEPHEN PERRY in Nauvoo page 2 This, Joseph refused to do. On June 16, he declared marshal law in Nauvoo, in an effort to defend it's citizens against the Mobs. When this didn't work, he decided that if he and Hyrum were not there, things would quiet down and the people would be safe. He and Hyrum went to the Iowa side of the Mississippi river in a leaky skiff. Peace was not restored. The people demanded that Joseph surrender or they would raze the town. Some of the brethern visited Joseph with this information plus a plea from his wife, for him to return and face trial in Carthage. He and Hyrum returned and with members of the City Councel traveled to Carthage, under the promised protection of Governor Ford. All of the defendants, including Stephen Perry were bound over for trial. In a sly move, the prosecution demanded a bail of $500 each, hoping to overreach the wealth of the defendants. They were confounded when some of the defendants put up the sum total of their property and the bail of $7500 was reached. The defendants were dismissed. Once outside, Joseph and Hyrum were again arrested on an illegal charge of treason and jailed. John Taylor, one of the defendants and some other brethern choose to stay with Joseph. The rest probably returned to their homes. Two days later on the 27th of June, Joseph and Hyrum were murdered when protective troops were ordered to leave, by Governor Ford and the Mob stormed the jail. NECESSARY EXPLANATIONS: Stephen Perry's name is listed as Stephen C. Perry in the excerpts taken from Willard Richard's notes. In all of Joseph Smith's excerpts and in the minutes of the Municipal and Carthage Court records, it is listed as Stephen Perry. At the Carthage trial, a P.T. Rolfe, mobster, stated that Stephen Perry was one of the men who moved the press. Volume 6, page 489. In May, 1844, an S.A.Perry from Essex, New York, was made a delegate to a committee to nominate Joseph Smith, President of the United States. Was this Stephen Perry? 217 |
