Show HISTORY OF STEPHEN PERRY AND ANCESTORS page 3 had answered a mission call to the State of Vermont. He interrupted that mission to return home and help his family move. The Perry's along with other Church members formed a train of oxen drawn wagons and headed for Illinois. They left New York on the 3rd of September, 1842 under the leadership of Joseph Grover. When they arrived at Kirtland, Ohio, Elder Grover took his leave of the wagon train. A vote was held to select a new captain, and Josiah Henry was chosen. This vote was taken on October 10th. The train arrived in Nauvoo on the 6th of November. The Perry's soon established themselves. Stephen owned 3 lots in, three different city blocks. Josiah Henry owned an entire block. The Perry's were well acquainted with Joseph Smith and his family. When Joseph and his brother Hyrum were killed on June 27, 1844, the Perry's along with all the Saints, deeply mourned his death. They were to learn that the mob had nob satiated their hunger for violence in this gross act of murder. Stephen was an imposing figure of a man, standing well over 6 feet tall. He was a man of many talents with a good singing voice. He could hew a log straighter by sight than most men could with a chalk line. He was a brick and stone mason. (did he learn this trade in Nauvoo or did he bring it with him from New York?). He had a natural ability in some medical fields. He could straighten and sew a hair lip on an infant (without anesthesia). He pulled teeth and set broken bones. All of his life he had been called far and wide to relieve people's suffering. (4) He was a deeply religious man with a very strict moral code. He was honest, thrifty and loved by all who knew him. (4) Stephen and all his family were strong and faithful members of the Church. Josiah Henry had been ordained a Seventy and had completed the mission he interrupted to help his family moved. He also filled at least one more mission. On 30 November, 1845, he married Lucinda Eliza Cole. The couple took out their endownments in the Nauvoo Temple on 20 January 1846. William Howard was a guard for Joseph Smith and succeeded in warning him of the approach of armed men on horseback. Joseph thanked him and disappeared behind a hidden panel in the wall. William's horse had been taught to jump walls and fences and it was with this trick that William managed to beat the armed men. They arrived and could not find Joseph. They went away cursing the horse that had beat them. William Howard took out his endownments in the Nauvoo Temple at the same time as Josiah. On December 3rd, 1843, Susannah Irene married William Jones. He died 3 and one half months later on March 16, 1844. On the 22 March, 1847 she married Alonzo Edison Jones. Stephen and Rhoby took out their endownments on 25 December, 1845, Stephen served as an officiator in the Temple as evidenced by the following story. Stephen's younger son Sylvester Lyman Perry became desperatly ill with chils and fever which did not respond to treatment. His parents were fearful of his recovery. One day Sylvester called his mother, and told her, "Mother, don't worry. Tomorrow I'll not have any chills or fever." His mother, thinking that he might be delirious sent one of his older brothers to sit with him. Sylvester repeated what he had told his mother, addinq, "I can see the 220 |
