Show Sordid tale of duck starts to emerge By LUCY BOONE Standard-Examiner staff SLATERVILLE - A duck that forgot she was a plastic lawn ornament and flew to Washington D.C. earlier this summer continues to conceal the hows and whos of how she took flight. However, the sordid tale of what she did in D.C is emerging. In June, one of Keith and Jerri Butler's lawn ducks went missing, and they presumed her stolen. But then the couple began receiving postcards from D.C. stamped with a yellow, webbed foot. A week later she turned up on their front porch in an "I love D.C." T-shirt, with an assortment of souvenirs. While no one's admitting to the ducknapping, the Butler's have received additional news. It seems that while in the nation's capitol, besides learning American history, their duck got a little birds and bees education. The couple received a shoebox sized package in the mail with a note saying their matronly duck had met a handsome drake in D.C. The box contained a small, yellow rubber duck who the note claimed is the product of the liaison. "Hi, Mom," the note says. "That naughty, little duck," said Keith. But the ducklings arrival was only the latest in a series of items the Butlers have received. Shortly after the duck's return, a 96-picture photo album featuring the lawn ornament at the White House, Lincoln Memorial and Mount Vernon appeared on their door step. One of the Mount Vernon pictures showed the plastic duck amongst several of it's live, feathered comrades, and was captioned, "Me with some of my cousins." Three weeks before the news of the Slaterville bird's indiscretion arrived, Keith and Jerri received a card in the mail from the pictured cousins, saying what a great time they had during her visit and hoping that her fellow lawn ornaments weren't jealous of her trip. The Butlers say they have pursued every suspicion they've August 17, 2000 Mayor Butler's Duck Family concerns continue! had, trying to discover the culprit, who has kept them laughing and guessing. Because all the items are postmarked from D.C., Keith has even gone to Hill Air Force Base where he used to work and checked the travel records of his old co-workers to see who has been to the capitol recently. No luck. But the story of the fowlish farce is amusing others besides the Butlers. "A lot of our friends have passed it on. It's been e-mailed around the world," Keith said. "People are really getting a laugh out of it." With new-found friends around the world and international notoriety, who knows where the bird will end up next.
