Auditing EDP Systems (4) Methods, techniques, controls, and procedures used in the audit of computerized accounting systems. Prerequisite: Accounting 446. 448. CPA Review (4) Review of Financial accounting, cost accounting, managerial accounting, federal income tax, and auditing in preparation for the Uniform Certified Public Accountants' Examinations. Credit does not count toward any accounting degree programs. Prerequisite: Accounting 330, 340, 446. 449. Audit Techniques and Cases (4) . Advanced topics in auditing practice selected to prepare students for a career in auditing and for the CPA and CIA examination. Working paper techniques, statistics as applied to auditing, audit research techniques, and current auditing topics will be discussed. Prerequisites: Accounting 446. 450. Accounting Theory (4) Consideration of income theory. FASB conceptual framework, and current pronouncements utilizing primarily a normative approach. Problems in applying current pronouncements will also be considered. Prerequisite; Accounting 313. 456. CPA Law Review (4) Reviewing advanced law as related to the world of business, oriented specifically toward successful performance on the Uniform Certified Public Accountants' Examination. Credit does not count toward any accounting degree programs. Prerequisites: Business Administration 320, 321. 461. Advanced Managerial Accounting (4) Solving managerial accounting problems using advanced quantitative decision models and techniques such as linear programming, baye- sian analysis, markov analysis, simulation, regression, and network models. Prerequisite: Accounting 330. 470. Tax Research and Planning (4) Procedures in effective tax research as applied to specific problems of individuals, corporations, partnerships and fiduciaries. Prerequisites: Accounting 340 and 341 or consent of instructor. 480. Independent Study (1-4) Individual work or work in small groups by arrangement, in special topics not included in the announced course offerings. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor. 489. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) Open to students meeting criteria established from time to time by the department and on file either in the department or Cooperative Education Office. Credit does not count toward any accounting major or minor degree programs. 492. The lower division prerequisites for business and economics majors is Advanced Standing. DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS EDUCATION/ ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS Alden A. Talbot, Chairman Professor: Bill S. Henrie; Associate Professors: Margaret O. Bennett, Alden A. Talbot; Assistant Professors: H. Lon Addams, Donna M. Roberts. Description —The program provides majors with a broad overview of business with emphasis on teaching, secretarial, and clerical functions. The department offers preparation for careers in teaching, office management, executive secretarial, stenographic, and other secretarial clerical professions, word processing, bookkeeping, reporting, filing clerks, receptionist, and related careers. Education —In the four-year programs, the department offers comprehensive training for top-level positions. The two-year programs offer ex- 190 tensive training for a variety of secretarial/clerical job possiblities. The one- year program concentrates on entry level secretarial training. Employment Outlook —Business teachers may find the field crowded. However, willingness to relocate or to gain some job experience while waiting for the ideal position may be helpful. Employment in the secretarial/clerical field is excellent. Word processing skills are in more demand as rapidly changing technology requires additional schooling. Job opportunities are widely available through placement offices, state, federal, and private employment offices, job referrals, classified sections of the newspaper, and personal contacts. Related Careers —Students will be prepared to work in any field of business including medical, legal, dental, governmental, and other large and small business fields. Medical Transcription —The Department of Business Education/Administrative Systems, in conjunction with the School of Allied Health Sciences, can direct students to those classes which will enable them to acquire both the foundation knowledge and specific skills needed for medical transcription. Departmental Policies —Students for any degree, diploma, or certificate from the Business Education/Administrative Systems, or Secretarial Science Programs are subject to the following policies: A. Students who have taken shorthand and/or typewriting in high school will be placed in the appropriate level courses by means of an evaluation of their proficiency. Any skills courses that are bypassed may be replaced by elective courses in business. B. Students transferring credits from another institution must take at least one typewriting and one shorthand course at Weber state College to verify their skills. C. To enroll in any skill course, a student must have a grade of C or better in the preceding course in the same skill. Program: Administrative Systems Major —Bachelor Degree I. College Requirements: A.
