Child and Family Studies Program: Family Studies Minor General Requirements: A. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 24 credit hours. B. Child and Family Studies courses to elect from (Students may select courses of their choice from at least four of the five departmental areas): 1. Foods: Child and Family Studies 101 (3), or 310 (5) 204 (5), 300 (3), 402 (1-6). 2. Clothing and Textiles: 130 (3), 133 (1-6), 230 (4) 235 (5), 330 (1-6), 335 (3). 3. Management and Consumer Education: Child and Family Studies 110 (3), 115 (3), 315 (3), 316 (3). 4. Child Development: Child and Family Studies 150 (5), 253 (2), 255 (3), 257 (3), 360 (3), 362 (4), 364 (3), 368 (4). 5. Family Relations: Child and Family Studies 140 )4) 245 (4), 299B (4), 340 (4), 440 (4), 465 (4). Program: Child Development — Associate of Applied Science Degree I. General Education Requirements: (26 hours) A. A minimum of 93 hours are required to complete this degree. B. The required courses in the major field not to exceed 67 credit hours. C. English 101, 103, or Communications 102, or 103, or 307. D. At least 20 hours from the General Education courses listed in the catalog, including one course in each of the four areas, Humanities, Natural Science, Social Science and Personal Development. E. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. II. Specific Requirements (40 hours): A. 101 (3), or 310 (5), 150 (5), 256 (4), 340 (4), 364 (3), Additional courses to be determined in conference with an adviser. B. Courses to elect from (27 hours): Students should select courses from across the campus to enhance their teaching 232 competency in the areas of art, science, literature, music, first aid, food preparation, etc. Support Courses recommended: Botany 110 (5), 140 (3), 160 (4); Zoology 201 (5); Physical Geography 101 (5); Physics 101 (5), 102 (5), 103 (5). Program: Baccalaureate of General Studies Degree (BGS) — Emphasis: Child and Family Studies I. General Requirements: A. A minimum of 25 credit hours. B. Required Courses: 140 (4), 150 (5), and 340 (4). Additional courses to be determined in conference with an ad- Child Development Laboratory —A Children's School including a Day Care Center serves as a child development laboratory to give students practical experience. Students must complete Child and Family Studies 360 and 362 at a B level and apply to the Director of the Children's School two quarters prior to the student teaching. CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIES 101. Principles of Nutrition (3) Basic principles of human nutrition and their application throughout the life cycle. 110. Management for Effective Living (3) Management of human and material resources as they relate to time, energy, material, skills, and family relationships, Comparison of families with respect to goals sought, resources available and managerial behavior. PD115. Planning Individual and Family Finances (Formerly Family Finance) (3) Understanding the significance of values, goals, attitudes, and planning in the utilization of family financial resources as they relate to increasing satisfaction and promotion of good relationships within the family. 130. Clothing Construction (3) Basic clothing construction techniques with emphasis on the relationship between technique and product. 133. Clothing and Textile Modules* 1 -6) Modules related to both clothing and textiles. Offerings may vary in content and credit hours. Students may register for more than one module per quarter and may repeat for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Examples of modules which may be offered: Changing Your Appearance with Clothing; Household Textiles for Interior Decorating; Children and Their Clothing. PD140. Marriage as Developmental Process (4) Understanding the complex interplay between a changing society and personal decisions as they affect choice of a partner and one's ultimate family and lifestyle. PD150. Child Development (5) Fundamentals of growth and development relating to effective human relationships within the family; a study of behavior and cultural influences from infancy through adolescence. Directed observations in the Child Development Lab. 204. Food Preparation and Meal Management (5) Basic aspects of food selection and preparation. Principles of meal planning, preparation and service through emphasis on realization of personal goals through the economical use of available resources. 230. Pattern Design and Clothing Construction (4) Clothing construction with emphasis on the understanding of the fitting alteration, and making of patterns through the flat pattern method.
