Electives: It is recommended that electives be selected from academic areas which are taught in the elementary school, or from Education courses. * 20-hour emphasis only. DEPARTMENT OF SECONDARY EDUCATION Harley K. Adamson, Chairperson The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional and academic specialization. Program: Secondary Education Certification Program I. General Requirements: A. Admission and Retention Standards for the School of Education. B. The academic Teaching major and Teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 69 hours. 220 The Teaching major and minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement—see below). Composite Teaching Majors —In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs for requirements.) The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's academic (teaching) major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. II. Specific Requirements: A. 37 credit hours for certification. B.
