Majors in physical education are advised to select minors in areas such as math, science, reading, and English. Employment opportunities in the various areas related to health, physical education, recreation and dance are growing. Due to an increasing national interest in health maintenance and illness prevention, more opportunities will arise both in the public and private sector during the next few years. Current salary ranges for jobs in health, physical education, recreation and dance are reportedly within the following ranges: (1) local, state and federal government positions $10,000 to $27,000, and (2) private positions $14,000 to over $30,000. The projected increase for employment opportunities is approximately 21 percent. Related Careers — Opportunities in health, physical education, recreation and dance are many. Within the local, state and federal government agencies numerous postitions exist (e.g. teacher, coach, administrator, director of recreation, health, physical fitness and sport programs). Within the private sector many positions exist and are rapidly being created (e.g. executive fitness director, sporting good representative, recreation director, YMCA and YWCA director, private club professionals and directors). These are a few of the many alternatives available to majors and minors in health, physical education, recreation and dance. I. B. Program: Physical Education Major and Physical Education Teaching Major — Bachelor Degree General Requirements: A. Specific course requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Comun 102, Zooly 201, and Hlth 200 are required for P.E. Majors and Psych 101 is recommended. All can be taken as part of the general education requirements. A minor is required (refer to Teacher Education requirements) . Physical Education majors must have a 2.25 GPA or better in major courses. No more than one "D" grade is acceptable. Physical Education majors must have an overall GPA of 2.00 or C. Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.50 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Students obtaining a Physical Education teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education). These courses must include the following: Education 195 (1), 300 (3), 350 (3), 363 (3), 364 (4), 462 (3), 495 (15), 499 (5). Secondary school teachers are required to pass a metric and spelling competency test prior to student teaching. 238 c D E. F. G H B C D Specific Requirements: A. Recommended Support Courses (8 credit hours): Psych 101 (5), Chfam 101 (3). Outside Professional Activities—Student must participate in three outside professional activities approved by an ad viser. Program: Dual Certification of Secondary Physical Education Teachers for Elementary School. For individuals holding a secondary physical education certificate who desire to work in the elementary schools, dual certification is available. Please see the Chairman of the Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Department or the chairman of the Elementary Education Department for more information. Program: Athletic Coaching Minor and Athletic Coaching Teaching Minor I. General Requirements: A. Minors must achieve a GPA of 2.25 or better in minor courses. II.
