Show SAN FRANCISCO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE December 7, 1954 Gentlemen: Traditionally the organisational role of the 3rd Vice President has been that of the Vice President in Charge of Drinking, for this responsibility my candidate is eminently qualified both by experience and by inclination. They say intoxication is measured by the degree of alcohol in the blood stream, and nature has endowed my candidate with a high built-in immunity to intoxication by giving him a huge physique which simply contains more blood than granted most mortals. Not only has he the capacity required for the job but his taste in beverages is catholic to a high degree - he'll drink anything. From Caiso to Calvert, from corn whiskey to canned heat, my candidate is the man for the job. Besides these attributes the candidate whose name I am about to place before you has other characteristics that commend him to your attention. While not necessarily a prerequisite for the position you should not overlook the fact that ray candidate has talent and lots of it. This he has conclusively demonstrated as Treasurer of one of the largest oil companies in the world, and he is respected as one of the leading financial men of the country. For the past two years he has served on this Board and has demonstrated to all of us outstanding ability and conscientious devotion to the job at hand. He served for a time as Chairman of the Board of Pacific Public Service Company. Because this company owned Arrowhead and Puritas Waters Inc. 2nd this is one beverage distasteful to my candidate in its pure form, he initiated arrangements to dispose of the company. This further illustrates the integrity of the man, who was willing to sacrifice his position rather than be associated with something in which he could not believe. You should not be unmindful of the fact that he knows every banker from Montgomery to Threadneedle Streets.
