Show 4 Colonel Richard B. Mason, military governor at the time of the gold discovery... Doctor William J. Powell, surgeon of the U.S.S. Warren... George Hyde, Commodore Stockton's clerk on the U.S.S. Congress and later alcalde of San Francisco. These men are thus remembered daily. They came to San Francisco in the line of duty and most of them stayed. Thousands of their descendants passed through the Golden Gate during the Spanish American War, World War II, and the Battle for Korea. And many of them when they came back through the Golden Gate, decided to stay. |
