Show Rotary Luncheon - 10 - been privileged to receive from many of the more pious. Under Frank Ahern's aggressive program of law enforcement the Chamber must expect revenues from her type of business to decline rather sharply and must base its program on those legitimate businesses that believe in San Francisco and are willing to do their fair share in seeing to it that San Francisco is assured of fulfilling its destiny as the hub and the nerve center of one of the nation's most dynamic regions. Frankly, I am a little fed up with the parasites on our prosperity who will not assume their fair share of the burden. The local office of large national concern that hides behind national policy as the excuse for denying local community support. The businessman who has so prospered that he moves to the Peninsula and uses this as an excuse to withdraw support from a civic organization that had much to do with making possible his need for expanding facilities. As the preacher said in seeking Christmas dinners for the poor: "What we want, my friends, is not abstract sympathy, but concrete plum pudding". San Francisco and the surrounding communities are inevitably linked together in an economic unit that transcends the political boundaries, and they will rise or fall together, depending upon how we solve our problems of the immediate future in the great tradition of the not-too-distant past. Let us meet the challenges of change in San Francisco... the great surge at the crest of a century of growth...a flood of desire and a xxxxxx natural tendency toward assuming our place in the world as one of the cities of the future, instead of the past. I want to thank you sincerely 1 for letting me speak to you today. It has been a enjoyable experience. I hope that as time goes on, Rotary |
