The Nation needs and almost demands that the educational system, particularly the higher educational system, produce more students and better trained students and perform the fundamental research necessary to expand our knowledge either to defend ourselves in the struggle for survival or hopefully to bring about a standard of living and a social well being that could result from knowledge intelligently applied in a world at peace. Within its financial limitations Stanford has moved rapidly to fulfill its role and to continue to justify its place among the great universities of the country. In the past 20 years its student body has doubled, increasing from 4,200 students composed of 3,000 undergraduates and 1,200 graduate students to 8,400 students today made up of 5,000 undergraduates and 3,400 graduates. The number of faculty members has also doubled from 1939 to 1959. Not only has the faculty increased in size but it has increased in quality as well. With an increase in quality the curriculum is improved and the available funds are made to go farther and do a better job. Quality attracts quality, both among the faculty and among the students who have the right of selection in choosing a university. The progress
