Show Rotary Luncheon - 9 - be effective. But I am equally convinced that in this area of community activity no real measure of success could be obtained without the efforts of the individual Chamber members being supplemented by a competent, efficient, and dedicated group of people whose only job is to get this job done. Gentlemen, I believe that the Chamber of Commerce is worthy of your support, for it is organized to meet effectively a need that is important to your business and mine. It can do an even better job if it receives from you an even greater measure of support, either in terms of financial contributions or contributions of your skills in helping solve our community problems. The other day I was at a press conference in Chief Ahern's office at the Hall of Justice and one of the newspaper reporters mentioned a lady's name and asked me if I knew her. I told him that I did not recall meeting her. He said: "I thought you would know her. She is a member of your Chamber of Commerce". I again apologized for not recognizing the lady's name, pointing out that we had some 4600 members, and I could not be expected to know all of them. The reporter then said: "Well, how many of those members carry right in their advertisements that they are members of the Chamber of Commerce? This lady did, and for that reason I thought that you might know her". With that he pulled out the classified ad section of one of our papers, and there sure enough was the lady's ad carrying right in the text the proud fact that she was a member of the Chamber. The only real difficulty was that the young lady had been arrested on the preceding evening for soliciting. While she was offering services, in both the literal and figurative sense, that are illegal in San Francisco and most everywhere else, I could not help thinking that in other directions she had at least given the Chamber more effective support than we have |
