Show Statement About ferry Building Monument, Park and Embarcadero Freeway Problems By E. W. Littlefield, President San Francisco Chamber of Commerce to be Presented at Hearing Before Board of Supervisors, Tuesday, January 3, 1956. Mr. President, Mrs. McMahon, Gentlemen of the Board and Ladies and Gentlemen: I am Edmund W. Littlefield, President of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce beginning with the New Year. I want to take this opportunity to express to the President and members of this Board the appreciation of the business community as represented by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce for conducting this hearing and affording representatives of all viewpoints opportunities to express themselves on subjects of vast importance to our City. Certainly this is a demonstration of the democratic process in municipal government functioning at its best. Secondly, I want to pay tribute to San Francisco's daily newspapers for the tremendous interest which they have evidenced for some weeks in the Ferry Building Monument and Park Project. While it is impossible to agree with all that they have printed in word and illustration, they have valiantly informed the public about proposals of great significance to the community's future. This is most gratifying, as a vigilant, alert and informed press assures the continued progress of San Francisco. While the problems before you directly concern the City and County of San Francisco, they also involve three important agencies of the State Government -the State Division of Highways, the Board of State Harbor Commissioners and the State Park Commission. Citizens who are dedicated to the public interest serve in each of these agencies. Regardless of the outcome of today's hearing, I am confident that we may count on their constructive cooperation in the solution of whatever problems we are confronted by. The Chamber has worked closely with them in the past |
