The first two months of this year already reflect a substantial proportionate gain over 1955 when total volume over San Francisco piers was 5,807,000 revenue tons. Yes, San Francisco is going ahead--and we are going ahead with it. We have the western regional office of the U.S. Mining Bureau, the regional U.S. post office headquarters, and we have approximately 200 other Federal agencies in San Francisco employing more than 36,000 persons. We also have every reason to believe that contracts are assured to keep our shipbuilding industry at a level that insures perpetuation of a reservoir of highly skilled labor in our area. Last year 2,000,000 out of State visitors poured some $162,000,000 into Northern California - an important segment of our economy but subject to keen competition from other areas. Each additional day a visitor can be induced to remain here means additional thousands of dollars for our economy, so we must spare no pains to do everything in our power to make every San Francisco visit a prolonged attractive experience.
