Show Speech File Ladies and Gentlemen: Permit me to introduce myself. I am Edmund Littlefield, President of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Since the prime goal of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce is the preservation and enhancement of the American economic system of free enterprise, I find it extremely gratifying to be the presiding officer at this important occasion. I greet you on behalf of the "Invest In America Week" Committee which, with the Chamber, the San Francisco Bond Club, and the Security Analysts of San Francisco, is sponsoring today's salute to economic enterprise. Our lucheon today, which I am pleased to see so well attended, is the highlight event of "Invest in America Week" --a very worthwhile program of bringing home to the American people the fundamentals of our economic system. This event is our salute to the might of the individual in a free economy a recognition of the basis truth that every man and woman in America is a capitalist who, investing in the good things of life, invests also in the future of our nation. This year for the first time similar program are being conducted in Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Napa, Pittsburg, and Roseville, so "Invest In America Week" has become truly a Northern California event. As you travel the world, you cannot help but be impressed by the striking difference between the standard of living in the United States and that prevailing in any other country in the world. There is a direct relationship between the standard of living and the amount of energy consumed per capita, which shows that the tremendously greater productivity of the United States has been made possible by our large investment in plants, machinery, and equipment which have multiplied many times the might of the individual worker. |
