Show 11 spending, made inventories, particularly at the manufacturer's level, appear excessive. Therefore, the economy switched from a policy of inventory accumulation to one of inventory liquidation. The downward spiral was on. The production of durable goods went into a sharp decline and finally even the production of non-durables, heretofore thought almost inpregnable, also began to fall, although at a much slower rate. This is the classic pattern that leads to recession and to depression. The downward spiral that feeds on itself and brings economic catastrophe in its wake. Is this what we have to look forward to?
