Last year the Chamber of Commerce received hundreds of inquiries from servicemen who had been stationed here or embarked from here in the past... inquiries related to their desires to settle here permanently. The histories of San Francisco and our armed forces are thus intertwined. Being citizens of one of the great gateway cities of the world, we appreciate more than many isolated communities the significant roles played in our national and local history by men of the service. And we can see, in the space of our own generation, an acceleration of the cultural and economic impact these men and organizations have made on San Francisco.
