YOUNG REPUBLICANS Mr. Chairman and (Ladies and) Gentlemen: I am delighted to have the privilege of speaking to you today and to he in such select company as Mayor George Christopher and City Attorney Dion Holm, your two proceeding speakers, in this I imagine I have been chosen to handle the economic and business outlook phase of this discussion for the rather obvious a business man, reason that I'm not a politician nor a lawyer, but/an executive of a business firm and therefore might qualify as an economic crystal ball gazer. Let me set the stage for what 1 have to say by pointing to the most important fact having a hearing on our business and economic la the period, roughly of the last decade, California has been the golden destination of the largest influx of people to one area of amy migration of people in the history of the world! We now number some 14 million people. In 1940, California had lees than seven million people. In 1940 we were the fifth ranking State in terms of population. Today we are the second ranking State. And all the population experts predict that we will take the number one spot away from New York within the period of the most five to tea years at the most. In other words, this fabulous immigration factor is not something which is behind usbut a growth that is continuing in ever greater proportion.
