Show Printing Week Luncheon Page 3 with men's minds and not with the mere extension of their physical prowess. Through printing we have found the most effective means yet discovered to expand, preserve, and communicate knowledge and thoughts. Without printing certainly we would not have been able to develop civilization as we know it today nor could we hope for continued acceleration in advancing the arts and sciences, government - national and international, trade and industry. You gentlemen here today are engaged in a truly important undertaking. Now I have the honor to present to you my fellow guests at the speakers' table who are joined with me in paying tribute to these 20th century disciples of "Poor Richard", whose anniversary has been selected as the occasion of nationwide Printing Week observance: (Introduce head table guests from attached list) ... then ... To introduce our guest speaker today the printing industry has aptly selected an enthusiastic and aggressive young man who typifies the enlightened outlook that turns the wheels of modern business. A native of Pennsylvania and a graduate of Bethany College, West Virginia, our next speaker was until six years ago the sales manager for an important mid-western lithography firm. He then came to San Francisco, and this change of address further endears him to all San Franciscans as added testimony to the man's keen intelligence and sound appraisal of future opportunities. He had previously served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps, and completed active duty in the South Pacific with the rank of Major. His devotion to the many tasks that fell the way of vice-chairman of last year's Printing Week observance made him the obvious choice as Chairman of the 1956 Printing Week celebration. May I now present the Vice-President of the H. S. Crocker Company and Chairman of San Francisco Printing Week Committee, Mr. Robert J. Rodgers ... |
