Show MANAGEMENTS TRUE LABOR by Edmund W. Littlefield Executive Vice President, Utah Construction Company President, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce (Ladies and) Gentlemen: I am especially pleased to have this opportunity to speak to a group of representatives of our most important communications medium--the press--because what I have to say bears very closely upon industry's ever-widening concept of its community responsibilities. And certainly the public must look largely to the press for its impressionbe it good or be it bad--of industry's performance. When Mr. Habit invited me to speak to you, he suggested that I might talk to you about my work with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the Utah Construction Company. It always is hazardous to invite a speaker to talk about himself. He's liable to do it. It's usually his favorite subject but it doesn't always turn out to be as fascinating to his audience as it is to him. Mr. Habit, however, asked for it. So you get it. With your permission I shall talk about Utah Construction Company and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce because both are illustrative of three points of view that I would like to leave with you today. First, that the success of a business enterprise rests in great measure on the motivations, the drive, the ability and the vision of the men who manage it; and Second, that the driving force, the compelling motivation behind top management today is not only the money |
