Show Soroptomist Club Speech Page 12 Our one-way street program has proved itself, and San Francisco is today a model for study by engineering departments of major cities for its effective one-way street pro-gram and other phases of traffic control. Physical evidence of the growth of our city is apparent to anyone who looks at our skyline or scans the newspapers to see what lies ahead in construction. We're going to have a new Federal office and courts building in Civic Center, and, we hope, additional convention exhibit space in the same area. We're going to have new office buildings, new apartment housing. Our outstanding International Airport, if plans materialize, will undergo a multi-million-dollar modernization to prepare it for the jet age: new buildings, new runways, new world-wide promotion by the Chamber and Public Utilities Commission of its use for trade and travel. And, speaking of trade, I must call your attention to the fine gains made recently in our waterfront facilities and shipping. Since the beginnings of San Francisco our great harbor has poured the world's goods into our city, both in finished products and raw materials. The sale, manufacture and transportation of these goods have occupied a substantial number of our citizens. Conversely, thousands of our people earn their livelihoods, either directly or indirectly, |
