Show February 14, 1955 Gentlemen: I rise by appointment from Past President Mailliard to eulogize Jack Watson, and you are entitled to know why I was selected for the task. The assignment of responsibility - picking the right man for the job - these are critical decisions, but the public at large is often unfamiliar with the careful sorting process by which we endeavor to pick round pegs for round holes. Not long ago while I was spending a leisurely Saturday evening at home, the telephone rang and the voice at the other end said: "Mr. Littlefield, I am calling at the request of the Prime Minister of Ceylon who would very much like to meet with you, and His Excellency wonders if you would be able to join him in his hotel suite at ten o'clock tomorrow." Naturally I accepted and then quickly set about to try to learn from my business associates why the Prime Minister of Ceylon would be interested in either me or the company I represent. No one could cast any light on the question, and I was slowly and not too reluctantly arriving at the conclusion that perhaps I was making my mark in the world. Unfortunately for my swelling ego the phone rang again and a voice said: "Mr. Littlefield, this is Lizzie, Marriner Eccles' maid. I've been trying to get you but your line has been busy. Some fellow from Ceylon wanted to meet with Mr. Eccles but I told him Mr. Eccles was playing golf and he'd better talk to you." Jack, I was assigned this spot on the program in much the same way. Originally Jack Mailliard had selected some one else that he felt was better qualified.
