Show Draft Suggested remarks for Mr. Littlefield at "Invest in America Week" Luncheon April 30, 1956 Ladies and Gentlemen: Since the prime goal of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce is the preservation and enhancement of the American economic system of competitive enterprise, I find it tremendously gratifying to he the presiding officer at this important occasion. For today we are here to salute this great system of ours in the highlight civic event of what has come to be known as "Invest in America Week." This is northern California's salute to the might of the individual in a free economy...a recognition of the fundamental truth that every man and woman in America is a capitalist who, when he or she invests in the good things of life, invests also in the future of our nation. When we invest in America, our dollars go to work for us, our neighbors, our community. Whether it is a business, or a home, or a savings account, an insurance policy, or other propertiesall are investments which start a chain reaction. They create more capital, more money available to, in turn, create more jobs. And in the long run, this means greater opportunities, more security for us all. Invest in America Week calls these things to our attention, which is good. We need to be reminded of our blessings. And the gentleman who, I know, will do an outstanding job of thisas he does of anything he undertakesis our good friend and respected citizen, Mr. J. D. Zellerbach. (more) |
