Rotary Luncheon -4- are many but to list a few. As the Bay Area grows, much of the growth is necessarily taking place outside of San Francisco. We want as many of these people as we can possibly get to work and to shop in San Francisco. But our population grows faster than we have provided easy means of transportation into and out of our City. We are in grave danger of suffering from hardening of the traffic arteries. We must find better ways of bringing people into San Francisco both by rapid transit and by automobile. We need new freeways, new bridges. In a nation that increasingly travels by private automobile, we must also provide convenient parking at reasonable prices. Our wholesale and retail trade are both profoundly affected by traffic flow and parking convenience, not only in the volume of business they do but in their costs of operations. San Francisco, certainly one of the world's most attractive cities, is faced with finding ways to capture more of the tourist's dollar. Of those who come to California we are letting Southern California hold the visitors longer then we are retaining them here. Many of our civic buildings are inadequate. Our present Flail of Justice is a disgrace, a mistake that I hope that the electorate will correct at the June election. As the land we have available for use becomes scarcer and dearer, as the area around us grows and grows, we must constantly seek ways to make the best use of the land we have and to take the fullest advantage of our strategic position as the management and headquarters center of this great area.
