Show Rotary Luncheon - 5 - As the ancient limerick goes - There was an old woman of Thrace, Whose nose spread all over her face. She had very few kisses; The reason for this is There wasn't a suitable place. We cannot lose the types of new businesses that should come to San Francisco because we lack a suitable place to put them. This means redevelopment. It means reclamation. It means the removal of blight wherever it exists. We have always the problem of attracting new industries to our area, industries that will expand our economy, underwrite our prosperity, provide for full employment. We have lost the foreign trade market of Red China. With one of the finest harbors in the world we have the opportunity to tap to an even greater extent the wealth of the Pacific Basin, for we are the natural gateway to Japan, Indo-China, Australia, India, the Philippines, and Free China. We are constantly faced with the aggressive efforts of other communities who naturally seek to obtain advantages for their areas through better freight rates, improved cargo handling facilities and lower costs, increased government spending, special tax concessions as an inducement to new industries. Whether it be Seattle seeking the transfer of army activities or Los Angeles seeking an international airlines, we must constantly be prepared to hold our own at the least or improve our relative position if we can. Our international airport, only a few years finished, will soon be inadequate, so rapid has been the progress in traffic development. |
