Show Rotary Luncheon - 8 - else will solve our community problems for us. Perhaps it was in recognition of these facts that Chambers of Commerce, such as the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, came into being and have occupied an important role in performing for the business community an significant part in the solution of community problems and the stimulation of industry and commerce. In cooperation with each other the business men of this community have established an organization to which they have contributed money and, to the extent they were able, their time to serve on the Chamber's 1 40 committees. These committees are composed of some 300 business men, working in all important areas of business and community interest. They forman effective means of keeping in close touch with all segments of the economy, gathering and analyzing facts, defining the problems, recommending the solutions for final policy approval by the 31 members of the Chamber Board of Directors which meets weekly. The money contributed by the business community, supplemented in some measure by a fund from the City of San Francisco, is used to employ a staff of some 50 full-time people, and it is this full time staff that provides the necessary ingredient to make the program truly effective. For the occasional campaign reliance may be placed on volunteers but for the day-by-day hard work that is absolutely imperative in this field we must rely upon people whose only task is to follow through and see to it that everything is done within their power to translate into accomplishment the policies and objectives which have been established by the business community through its Chamber. Without the prestige, the guidance, and the help given by the membership of the Chamber the 1 full-time staff's work would not |
