Show Shrine Luncheon May 31, 1956 Shrine Ladies and Gentlemen: There is reposing on ray office desk a speech carefully prepared for this occasion. There it rests - forgotten by the man who was to deliver it. It was not left there carelessly but purposely, for on rereading it I became convinced that it was better forgotten by the speaker than delivered and even more quickly forgotten by the audience. The first half of the speech was devoted to telling you how good you are - a point on which you need no convincing and a well demonstrated fact widely accepted by the community and resting on a solid record of accomplishment. The second half of the speech was devoted to telling you how good we in the Chamber of Commerce are - a point in which the time allotted me would not enable me to be convincing to the doubters and one again better made by deeds than words. In lieu of these remarks so carefully prepared, I would like to leave with you these thoughts: First, the kind of a city that was satisfactory to serve as the center of a Bay Region having a population of 1,000,000 is outmoded when it tries to serve the present population or the population to come. Second, progress itself sets in motion the forces that will arrest and stifle the continuance of that progress unless these forces can be overcome. Just as a rapidly advancing army can overstretch its supply lines, so can a rapidly growing city outgrow the facilities that support its economy and its people. Thirdly, leadership is the quality, the essential ingredient |
