Show Luncheon honoring Stockholm Chamber of mmerce October 22, 1956 Honored Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen: We are immensely complimented today to have the privilege of playing host to our distinguished colleagues from Stockholm, and it is our pleasure to extend to them a warm welcome from San Francisco, the City that "knows how". Speaking of cities that know how, I have just today returned from a visit to Los Angeles which is playing host to the American Bankers Association Annual Convention. The leading bankers from all over the United States are gathered there and were busy entertaining each other over the weekend at a series of receptions before getting down to the serious business of the convention during the week. I attended such a reception yesterday which was given in the garden of one of the leading hotels, and I was standing admiring the beautiful setting with all of the bankers and their wives seated at small tables of 4 having their refreshments. Suddenly and instantaneously every woman in the garden stood up and screamed. The reason was quickly discovered. Each of these tables had been placed over a sprinkler head, and someone turned the sprinkling system on. San Francisco would never throw cold water on such a gay group. No hotel here has a garden big enough for the purpose. Seriously, we are indeed honored to have our distinguished colleagues from Stockholm with us today. The Stockholm Chamber of Commerce is one of twelve in Sweden, and is the oldest in that thriving and productive country, just as the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce is the oldest in the western United States. |
