In the long run I am certain that each of us would be vary much better off and that the Bay Area could assure to itself one of the soundest and most dynamic growths ever experienced by a mjaor metropolitan region by the Toronto type approach to our Bay Area problem, Mayor Christopher's suggestion that Stanford University and problem and make appropriate recommendations the University of California study this basin approach is an excellent starting point on getting the facts on which to base action. It is constructive truly a thoughtful suggestion and worthy of your support. Now you must pardon the layman for delving briefly into your fieldthe field of pure and applied politics. For you see, what the politicians do and think also has a bearing on the health of our economy. In this instance, however, I don't presume to offer answers--only to pose a situation which to me is the most fascinating subject of political conjecture to come along in a long time, 1 only ask that you not consider what I have to say in any partisan sense--but as a problem in political science. For all California's great new political and economic stature- and maybe because of it--there has seldom been a time in our history when the two major parties are doing more calculated to defeat themselves, not each other, I We suffer from an embarrassment of riches. On the Republican side of the fence let's be honest. There are three men of great ability, stature--and vote-getting power. They are Vice President Nixon, Senator Knowland and Governor Knight. If each had a different ambitionif each were seeking a different political officethen the Republican Party would indeed be in the position of the man who never had it so good. Running as a team, |
