Show 8 any quarter in the boom year of 1956. What the hell kind of a recession is this? It sounds like the lady driver who was stopped for driving down the wrong way on a one-way street and innocently replied, "But, officer, I was only going one way." Well, it's a serious recession, even though it has not yet put its clammy hands on every segment of the economy. It's serious because the decline in industrial production has been the steepest in 20 years. Manufacturing and mining hit the skids in the fourth quarter last year and slid down precipitously until just recently. You have to go clear back to 1937 to find so sharp a reversal. |
